Recently, Mrs. Atkins and other school officials lowered the cost of yearbooks in hopes that more students would purchase them. Students were able to buy yearbooks for $60, while seniors received an even bigger discount at $55 per yearbook. The sale ended on September 12. Yearbooks will no longer be available for $60. Compared to other schools, however, the cost of the yearbook is still relatively low.
Yearbooks are an important part of a student’s high school experience, as they preserve memories of school life and allow us to look back on the moments we shared during these four years.
As stated earlier, the reason for the reduced prices is accessibility. Lowering the cost helps students who may not be able to afford the standard price of a yearbook.
Speaking of yearbooks, this year’s edition is expected to be better than ever. The theme was still undecided at the time of writing this article, but recently the yearbook class put a poster outside Ms. Atkins' room saying that it wold be "Game On!". Stay tuned for exactly what is meant by this theme.
We spoke with Mrs. Atkins, a teacher at AHS who sponsors the yearbook class and oversees its production. She explained, “It’s a time capsule of your high school experience.”
We also interviewed one senior, Elianna L., who said, “It’s a great way to remember the past school year, and the people we met and built relationships with.”
Whether printed yearbooks will continue to exist in the digital era remains uncertain. According to one reporter, “Printed products have continued a downward spiral with the surge of digital technology.”
The history of yearbooks is also fascinating. According to Wikipedia, “A marble slab commemorating a class of military cadets in Ancient Athens during the time of the Roman Empire is an early example of this sort of document. Proto-yearbooks in the form of scrapbooks appeared in U.S. East Coast schools towards the end of the 17th century. The first formal modern yearbook was the 1806 Profiles of Part of the Class Graduated at Yale College. Because printed photography did not yet exist, the 1806 Yale College yearbook included printed silhouettes of the students.”
Returning to the cost of yearbooks, the expense lasts only for a moment, but the memories they hold last a lifetime. Even if you missed the sale, you can still purchase one from Mrs. Atkins in Room 309 or from the bookkeeper, Ms. Mayson. Students interested in working on the yearbook can speak with their guidance counselors about registering for the course next year, especially if they have already taken Dr. R.'s Journalism class.
