Teachers shouldn't give out too much work in a day
By Denise O.
Teachers giving out too much work causes so much stress and is very overwhelming for students, and according to the Healthline, 80% of students feel stressed out due to teachers giving out too much homework than needed. Also, the Mayo Clinic states that chronic stress can cause health havoc on your mind and body, which isn't something a teacher would want her students to have. If kids are feeling unduly stressed due to the amount of work teachers are assigned, maybe they should not assign so much work.
First of all, workloads are especially problematic when required to complete at home, outside of regular school hours. Most students have a life outside of school. According to Statista, over 70% of students work after school, and meanwhile almost half do sports. These students who do work or have after school activities till very late don't get home until an even later time, and most genuinely already feel very tired. Just the thought of finishing the work they were not supposed to finish at school is very overwhelming because they are going to have to stay up later than planned. Those who do sports don't automatically go somewhere after school like for those who work, but they do have to do stuff in their homes like clean or most of the time it's something family personal they have to deal with before going to practice or games.
My personal experience provides a second reason in support of the claim that teachers should assign less work. Personally, everyday after school I have to clean the house, leaving me little to no time to squeeze in some time to do unfinished school work. Most sports practices which are daily last up to maximum 3 hours, and from that most athletes get home late, and when they do they have to take care of their hygiene and finish other activities they did not finish before going to practice and by that it's already late. When soccer season is going on, I don’t get to not do my chores; I have to do them on top of my sports schedule, leaving even less time for homework.
The excessive amount of homework can also cause anxiety, it's very draining for most students. Most teachers believe it's going to help work our brains more but that honestly just is not true, they are causing more stress than help.
Finally, assigning lots of homework is counterproductive. A lot of teachers complain about students falling asleep in their class, about 60% of those lose sleep because of how late they stay up doing homework. Most students have up to 6.8 hours of homework per week, and as stated by the OECD, they believe that is way too much for an average student.
There’s some people who also have a completely different opinion than mine like for example, Madisson V. (‘28) a classmate of mine said “I feel like it's good for teachers to give out more work because it helps learn more on the subject being taught.” However, that opinion is nowhere near as good as mine because, yes, she might have an easy going life and actually has time for the extra work, but we all don't have that luxury.
Brandon V. (‘28), a classmate of mine, said, “I hate the fact that my teachers give more work than expected, when my life is already so busy and I don't have the time for it.”
A few minutes after that, I asked another classmate of mine in the gym, Sa’miyah M. (‘28), who is quoted as saying, “I feel like teachers should not give out too much work because students have enough things to worry about and adding onto that with extra work can cause stress.”
In conclusion, school work should be done in a healthy and happy environment that is also not stressful or draining. For more information if I didn't convince you enough, you can check out another article on this topic at The Southern.
