According to a study from The Washington Post, the average amount of hours a student should spend on Their Homework is 2.7 hours per weeknight. Is this too much? The issue of assigning too much work is perennial, and many students are complaining today that it's way too much work just like back in the day they complained about homework, too. Some people say homework is necessary for a variety of reasons while others say it's aggravating and foolish. When it comes to my perspective, teachers should NOT assign students so much homework!
The first reason why I think homework is too much is because it can be overwhelming for some students. The pressure to perform well academically and meet homework expectations can lead to heightened levels of anxiety in the students, and when students feel anxiety they cannot perform at their best. An article from Brain Balance explains, “Often, homework is associated with upcoming tests and quizzes, which affect grades. Students can feel pressure related to being "graded" and avoid homework since it feels weighty and important.”
Another reason why I think homework is alot to AHS students is that it can cause some kids to fail or fall behind in their work. For example, consider this hypothetical scenario: Max was in the 7th grade and missed multiple days of school because of a medical reason. On his day back he had so much work to catch up on . He tried everything to get caught up but it was just too much for him. He stressed so much it gave him a headache. His grades started to drop really bad until the end of the year came.
Not only did he finish his work but he made bad grades on the assignments because he wasn't there to participate. So not only did he have to much work but that same work made him fall behind in school and not pass because the teachers piled up his work and made it hard for him to continue, In his own personal life, due to his absences at school
Some people won’t agree with me or have a different opinion than me, especially when it comes to homework. Teachers, for example, might say that homework gives students more practice on key skills related to course content, that homework keeps them busy so they aren’t doing other things like staring at a cell phone or worse, and that homework engages parents because they become more likely to know what their kids are learning / doing while they are in school. These opinions are wrong, however, because not everyone has the same life as everyone else. Some students aren't able to do all the work at once because it's too much on that student, And could cause stress in their mental health. Not only their Health but their grades are dropping badly which causes them to fail and fall back.
Jourdan W. says “it doesn't stress me out that my teachers dont give homework unless we have missing work but other than that it's not that bad.”
Angelina G. says, “I feel that we should get a little bit ls of homework, because it's a little annoying to go home and get it done when I have other stuff to do that is important , or I have to go to somewhere and I can't be on my phone or bring my chromebook with me , it’s annoying to try and get it done and be expected to have it done by the next day and turn it in , depends on how much we get and how much time we get the work done and yes when I get home it stresses me out a little bit because I'm busy with other stuff and I don't want my grades to go down so I try my best to get it done so I don't get behind on my work but still find a way to get behind, so stressing."
Tru B. says, “ I feel like there's no point for homework , it's too much for us to do and for teachers to always forget about it when we do it.”
Overall , teachers should not assign so much homework to AHS students because it's way too much to handle and also stresses students out I figure if they didn't post so much work they might actually participate in the assignments, they post but its just too much.
