Students stressed from school disorganization and crowding
By Nene P. and Mimi B.
Even though the school year just started there have been a few bumps in the road here at Airport High School such as fights, vaping, not wearing IDs and more. The chaos caused in the wake of these issues and the school’s response to them has, at times, felt frustrating and stressful for students.
This current event is newsworthy because the entire campus is being affected. All of these things are not safe for a school environment, which is a place you should be able to learn and focus. Students should not have to worry about being uncomfortable, stressed or unsafe, especially when the average number of students in our high school is only about 1300 students. Mostly everything that has been going on has a lot to do with disorganization because a lot of these things can be avoided if the school was more efficient and organized.
Based on interviews and eyewitness reporting, one of the main ways AHS is becoming disorganized has to do with the hallway traffic and bathrooms. Keep reading for a detailed scenario. Airport’s hours are from 8:30 to 3:30, which are a total of 7 hours, and for each class a students has around a total of 90 minutes of class time and a total of 5 minutes to get to class or you will get a tardy, which seems pretty strict and organized, but when you have over 1000 students in one school all in the halls and trying to use the restrooms at the same time, it can get very chaotic. It can get overwhelming when the hallways get crowded and cramped, causing students to take longer to get to class. The hallways of the bathroom are just as crowded but it's not just crowded because students have to use the restroom. It is crowded because it is filled with students smoking and vaping and doing things they are not supposed to do. Furthermore, some students have allergies or asthma and can't inhale things because it can tend to trigger their condition and cause things like difficulty breathing, coughing, and wheezing, which can lead to shortness of breath and an asthma attack in some cases.
Another way AHS becomes disorganized is when fights break out. High school can be very chaotic and even full of gossip, drama and “beef” that can lead up to fights and more, which can be unnecessary and disorganized. The fighting can cause commotion in the hallways, bathrooms, classrooms, and basically the whole entire school which can lead to people being late to class or being disrupted, the students can get pushed out the way due to the teachers and policies trying to get to the students fighting, also some students would be recording and screaming whenever fights are happening and running towards them going out of the area which can also cause a lot of commotion. Some students like to cause fights by being messy and telling rumors to others or false statements. The fighting would also take place in the classrooms which is also disruptive to students trying to learn and do work in class, the teachers would also have to write referrals. The fighting can be caused by an expression of frustration or anger due to problems at home or school and differing opinions and also rumors. Fighting is one of the reasons why Airport high school is disorganized and it can be a main one if we don't prevent it .
One student shared the following personal experience. On Sep 13, 2024 around 8:30, many students went to the restroom before class. To be more specific the girls restroom was filled with a variety of students and even some stalls were filled with multiple people and there were even some groups huddled up as well. With all of this commotion and riot with over twelve students in the bathroom the next door teacher and Pretty Eagles Dance Team coach and Pretty Eagles Dance Team coach Ms. Barrett’ came in saying things like “why are there so many students in here?” and “why are there 7 people in one stall when there's only one toilet?” She was also saying to “get to class and there are people that have to actually use the restroom” and much more. This caused a lot of students to be late and out of the area.
One student said that she thinks the airport is an organized clean place and that the disorganization doesn’t stop her from learning and that her favorite part of the day at Airport is seeing her friends.
Another student said that he hates it here and that it's full of drama and that some people are stank and there's no room in the hallways.
Overall, some people think that Airport isn't organized & they hate it here or dislike some things about it . Other people think that Airport is organized and they love it here and they just choose to not let the little bad stuff get in the way.
According to information found online, “Students often face issues such as difficulty understanding, time management, peer pressure, bullying, and dealing with high expectations” when schools aren't organized. Most of the students claim that it is hard to work in a disorganized area and it is hard to focus and get their work done. This can affect students' grades and cause them to fail and have to repeat their class again which can make a student go off track.
If you have ideas on how to make AHS a more organized place, reach out to your teachers and/or admin.
