Students start running for class president, other offices

by Jacob R. & Kameron B.

Current members of the freshmen class president are already preparing to run for class student body president, including Zavier Hammond. Applications to run for class president went live on August 29. There are more students running for class president this year due to a bigger interest in class president in general.

This news is important because the class president is the leader of the school and the person who makes rules and choices around the school.

Class president isn’t something a lot of students try out for due to the role they would get from other students such as “nerd”. A “Nerd” is a person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject, especially one of specialist or niche interest, which is saying that anyone who is extremely interested in subjects and is really smart. It’s also stereotypical of smart people and sometimes teased.

Zavier Hammond is 14 years old and running for class president as a freshman. He has been thinking about it since he started ninth grade just a few short weeks ago. His parents wanted him to be class president, which means they wanted him to be a leader of the school, and so far he is off to a good start merely by taking the step to be a candidate.

Leadership has been touted by many to be a valuable trait in a person.  For instance, Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there” which emphasizes the importance of self-belief in achieving success. This can motivate young freshmen and students to become successful people growing up and obviously to become successful leaders, such as class president.

George Washington once said, “It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company”, which emphasizes it is better to choose the people you want to be surrounded with. This can motivate students to help each other to become a leader such as class president.

Lastly, Donald H. Mcgannon once said, “Leadership is action, not position,” which emphasizes that leadership is not about the authoritative role we hold in an organization, rather it is about the choice of actions we prefer to take. Which also helps motivate students to become leaders and successful people.

Generally speaking, some people think that class president is a waste of time and other people think it helps people for any jobs. Some people think that if they become class president they might get stereotyped in a mean way  and other people also think that being class president is like being the most successful person in the school. Both perspectives are kind of true but it shouldn’t stop a student from becoming class president.

General information about being a class president can be found on Wikipedia.  The class president has gotten stereotyped so much, people such as Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan became class president, and  the class president also has the responsibility of leading meetings and organizing student activities and events.
