Students reflect on Spirit Week

By Londyn B.

During the week of September 3 through September 6, 2024, Airport High School introduced the first spirit week of the year.

This is important because of the amount of students impacted by spirit week.

The purpose of this was mainly for fun, but also an opportunity for the students to get comfortable while the school year kicks off. Transitioning into a new school year can be difficult, especially for freshmen.

Some of the students who attend AHS have some opinions about the school’s past spirit week and how it could be improved.

Most of the students that were interviewed were freshmen and they shared their thoughts and ideas about what the themes of the next spirit week should be.

Sa’Miyah M., a freshman on the school’s JV volleyball team, was asked what her favorite day in spirit week was. She responded by saying, “My favorite day in spirit week was pajama day because it reminded me of being at home in the warmth of my bed.”

When asked about the pros and cons of spirit week, LillyAnn H., another freshman who was interviewed, stated “The pros of  spirit week are that you get to show school spirit and participate in activities, and the cons are that some of the themes are hard for certain people to participate in because some people may not understand how to dress up for certain days, or may not have that certain material for that day.”

The other questions that were asked to other students were, “Do you think spirit week is necessary?”, “What do you like about spirit week?”, and “What does spirit week mean to you?”

Heaven M. stated  she liked that “we get to do things differently instead of following regular school expectations/rules and that we can just have fun.”

Kingston B.L. responded to the question about what spirit week means to him. He says, “ I like that we can dress up and express ourselves”.

Interviewee Kairi L. , one of the many new coming freshmen, stated that she “does not believe it is necessary”, continuing on by saying, “it just gives people things to do during the week without being basic and plain, but really there is no point to it.”

In 1952 at Palo Alto High School, (CA), spirit week was known as “Friendship Week.” This was the first model of spirit week.

75% of high schools have celebrated spirit week since the 1990’s

In 1960, “Friendship Week” was renamed spirit week and is cited as the country's first version of the modern day spirit week.
