Students react to Alex Murdaugh’s life sentences

by Valeria P.V.

On March 2, 2023 at Airport High School both students and teachers were tuned into news channels airing Alex Murdaugh's court trial where he was being tried for murdering his son, Paul Murdaugh, and his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, just waiting for the verdict. He was found guilty for killing them both and sentenced to life in prison.

In June 7, 2021 at the Muradugh’s home at Islandton, South Carolina, a call was made to the police department by Alex Murdaugh claiming to have discovered his son and his wife dead. Alex had claimed to have arrived home and found them dead but in a video found on Paul's phone not long before he got shot Alex could be heard speaking in the background which contradicts what he had said before, meaning he was there at the time of the attack.

Since then residents of South Carolina have been talking about it non-stop. Some believe he did it while others are forming conspiracies. There are many different theories out there but most students at our school think Alex Murdaugh did the murders himself.

Some students have said, “He deserves exactly what he got and I'm glad they’re putting him away”.

When told about how Alex’s attorneys filed a notice of appeal they were outraged saying, “I hope it gets rejected because he needs to do time for what he has done. It would be so unfair if it got approved; he shouldn’t just get an easy way out."

Asking around Airport High School about whether or not they believe Alex is guilty or about his involvement in the crime you will get a variety of answers but in the end most believe Alex is the only perpetrator and in the end they feel as though justice was served for Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.

Not only did Alex kill his family but that same year shortly after his son and wife were killed he also hired a hitman to kill him. Alex Murdaugh was stopped on the side of the road when he made a phone call to the police that he was bleeding from his head from a gunshot. He had a $10 million life insurance policy so he thought that by hiring a hitman to kill him his other son Buster Murdaugh would’ve been better off.
