Students question legitimacy when school events canceled

By Autumn T.

In the past few months, several events that had been planned for students, including a movie night and winter dance, were canceled at the last minute due to low pre-sales of tickets. Many students were disappointed and confused as they had planned to attend these events and pay at the door, but they no longer could do so given the cancellation.

Aubrey F., who is a sophomore, and Aleena S., a JV soccer player and also a sophomore, discuss how "schools don't care about student interest." Both complained about how they felt schools overcharge for work that has such a short deadline. Many people are also interested in learning how schools decide to use the funds following the activities.

Aleena states, “My favorite school event would have to be the football games, they're pretty much the only events in school that don't get canceled, if I were to throw an event I would give way much more time for students to buy tickets.” A lot of Airport High Schools events get canceled due to “lack of participation.”

Aubrey states, “Most students don't have jobs so it would take a minute to get money from their parents.” A Lot of people don't know that money from events actually is used for preparations of other events. Aubrey then got asked, "Where do you think the money goes from the events?" Aubrey states, “ Definitely not the school bathrooms.”

Many events thrown at schools are important. They are always linked to academics, or situations going on inside the school. Aubrey F. was asked, “How much would you charge to attend events?” The interview took place in the hallway at the time, she then proceeded to point at a poster and said, “Definitely not $40,” which was how much AHS was charging for an upcoming event: prom.

Both girls were asked how they felt about admin charging students to attend an event that wouldn't even exist without students to play, such as Volleyball, Baseball, and Football games. Aleena said, “I think its a ton of BS. We shouldn't be charged to go to an event at our home field that wouldn't exist if students didn't play it.”

Maybe if student participation in school activities increased the price for these events could decrease.
