Students believe the school system is broken
by Ever V.
Students recently are claiming that the school system at Airport High School is broken due to the way they are treated as students at this school.
This is important because it shows how students really feel about the school and it helps parents see that school doesn’t always seem like it may appear to be.
Students claim that teachers don’t care enough about students and that they do their minimum just for their paycheck. In addition, students also claim that grades shouldn’t define how intelligent they are or what capabilities they have.
Lastly, students also claim that some teachers at Airport High School lack effort to help students learn and lack teaching skills, especially while teaching a lesson. Students feel that the system at this school is unfair due to not paying more attention or giving students chances to speak when something goes down.
Charlie R., a sophomore at Airport High School states, “This one kid...was involved in a fight that took place in the cafeteria and he tried to stop the fight and he was expelled for trying to help the teachers stop the fight." In other words, it feels like students get in trouble even when they try to do the right thing. Punishing kids for helping reflects a broken system.
Trenton L., another sophomore at Airport High School claims, “Grades don’t define me as a person. Plus I’m very intellectual and I just don’t think grades should define kids but it's like parents think grades define their kids, your kids are very smart and everyone has their own abilities in something.” Overemphasizing grades and de-emphasizing actual learning is also suggestive of a broken system that values data over substance.
A lot of students feel the same way about this topic, but obviously not everyone agrees with this statement.
