Students angry over bell times at school; more time between classes needed

by Nia J.

Airport High School has a transition time of 5 minutes between classes and students feel as though they cannot get to class easily in this time frame.

“Many times both the students and teachers complain about the lateness. The students don’t feel there is enough time to get to class, and the teachers do not like when the students are late. One of the biggest factors of this is due to the lack of time during classes, and abundance of students in the school.”

One freshman student of Airport states, “Mannn, we never have enough time to get to class!”

Students feel as though the time crunch is affecting them negatively. Some students have their next class on the opposite side of the school which is very frustrating for them.

Another freshman at Airport states, “Sometimes I'm late to class since some of my classes are so far apart!”

Students also feel that the number of students in the hallway does not help with the time crunch everyone in the school is on.

“The abundance of students and the short amount of time to get from one class to another leads to many being late.”

“We don’t even get enough time to use the restroom in between class, we either have to hold it or be late to class since so many people go to the restroom at the same time.”

Not only does this cause lateness, the students can get into trouble for being late. Which a lot of times are caused by inevitable things.

Students also feel that some people are naturally slow walkers which cause other students to be late to class at times, as well as those slow walkers themselves.

In an the article titled “Extra Time Needed between Class,” a patch of the article includes: “Passing periods are supposed to be a time where students can complete various activities that they are usually not allowed to do in class, like talking to friends or taking a quick bathroom break before having to go to their next period. However, students are finding it difficult to even get to class on time, let alone complete these activities due to the short passing periods.”

This is very relatable to the students at Airport High Shool and their frustrations.

There is a question that is posed though. If students do get extra time for transitions, Where will this time come from? How will it affect the entire schedule? Will there be a longer school day? Less time in class? Will time be taken out of lunch for this longer transition time? Only time will tell.
