Review of 'Heartstopper' on Netflix
by Ava C.
A lot of kids in or out of highschool struggle with finding their true self. Heartstopper is a TV series on Netflix that people can look up to for inspiration.
Heartstopper tells the story of teenagers Nick and Charlie find their uncommon friendship might be something more as they navigate school and young love. They are surrounded by an amazing friend group.
Heartstopper is a great series. It is very sweet yet talks about real things going on in a teenager’s life. Specifically, the point of view, dialogue, and soundtrack make it overall a great show that many Airport students may benefit from watching.
The main aspect of the show that makes it great is seeing high school through the lens of characters who are struggling with problems but overcome them. For example, consider the following scene. The point of view of this one scene is a group of highschool kids. Two characters have kept their relationship on the down low because of the negative feedback they fear they will get, but they thought this moment would be the perfect time to share that they are together. The point of view in this scene really helps to show how difficult it is to be honest about one’s true identity, but it does always work out better in the end to do so, and one will likely have someone right by their side.
In the show, the dialogue between the characters is Darcy, Tara, Nick, Charlie and Toa. For example, in this other scene the main friend group went thrift shopping for prom. Darcy really wanted this dress for prom but she didn't have enough money for the dress. So all of her friends decided to chip in to get her the dress. The dialogue that goes on this scene shows much meaning it has just based off of the way they create the dialogue in this scene. They created it to where the group is supporting her even though she doesn’t want it. They all kept insisting for her to take the money but she said no until she accepted.
On the soundtrack there is one song called “Why am I like this?” by Orla Gartla. One of the lyrics that play during this scene is “Why am i like this, Why am i like x3). It starts to play when a character in the scene is trying to figure himself out. Debating on if he likes his best friend romantically or not. The song emphasizes the emotions in the scene. It brought out a sad/aww feeling because he is figuring his own self.
When asked, several Airport students reported watching and liking the show as well. “It’s a really great show as well as helping the younger generations,” said Shirl.
“I love watching it, it’s honestly been one of the best shows to come out,” said Ben.
Critics also have positive opinions of the show. On the RottenTomatoes website, the critics gave the show a 96% Average Meter. A show critic said, “The found family vibes are strong with this show, and heartstopper remains just as sweet and wholesome as the first season. This time, however, there’s room for serious topics that the show handles beautifully.”
I gave the show a 9.75 out of 10 stars for an overall rating. Those interested can watch Heartstopper on Netflix.
