Problem of plastic water bottles more popular than ever before; AHS students express thoughts, fears
by Micaela B.
Today, in the world more than one million water bottles are being sold every minute and its seen to be no sign of slowing down, as the rates have gone higher and higher up every few years. It is expected that by 2030 the sales of water bottles will have skyrocketed despite how high it already is.
This is a huge worry to our environment and the health of you and everyone else around us. The plastic we are drinking out of can have numerous effects on health, the chemicals in plastic can get into the water and can cause a variety of health effects. The health effects differ from liver, to kidney damage and can even cause cancer. Obviously nothing that we want.
It is in our fears that as the numbers increase more and more, the problem may be too big of a hole to climb ourselves out of. Researchers have analyzed data from over 100 countries and found that the water bottle industry saw a 73% growth rate in sales from 2010 to 2020. And it hasn’t got any better in current timing.
A 9th grade student here at Airport High school, Keashuan L., stated, “It’s not that hard to stop buying plastic bottles people.”
He goes on with “save the turtles”. He jumps in again, “I think that we as a community need to all together make change in the world”.
In order to stop the negative impact water bottles have on the environment we need to make change and difference in the world we call home. This is where we live and it is important that we treat mother earth with kindness and respect.
A 10th grade student Lertaw A., states, “I don't think no matter how much people address the issue that there will be any kind of change”
She continues, “Their are so many people in the world, do you think they all are gonna drop water bottles just because someone on the internet said so?”
She goes on to say, “I just don't see the point in spreading awareness with no change.”
When asking people about they’re opinions and feelings about this current issue, there is a variety of mixed emotions. Some think that no matter how much you speak about it nothing will change. And then on the other hand others find it to be a issue that can be helped by ditching plastic. What are you’re thoughts and feelings? Now that you’ve heard everyone else what is your take on this situation? Do you think we can make a difference by deciding not to buy plastic bottles?
