Open soccer season approaches
By Denise O.
Recently, Airport High School announced soccer conditioning for boys and girls soccer, but it is technically called open season because anyone can come out and do it.
According to the South Carolina High School League, “During open-season, coaches may conduct organized practice as specified in the Open Season/Closed Season practice schedule.”
Last year only the boys started conditioning this early, so it was surprising that the girls started early too. This open season lasts until January because that's when actual conditioning starts for the Airport High Schools soccer season; after that they have two days of tryouts and that applies to both the girls and boys.
Last year both the JV and Varsity boys soccer team didn't really have a good season. They lost most of their games, so hopefully this year could be different, and that open season has a positive impact when it comes to prepping them for the actual season.
On the other hand the girls varsity season was the complete opposite. They had an amazing season, they won a lot of their games and lost only a few, their season was very confident and exciting. The JV girls team had more of a mixed season. They won and lost most of the games they had, but that didn't really affect them. Their love for the sport was still thriving. They did win their last game they had which was very good to end off the season.
Both the girls’ and boys’ teams have new coaches this year. The boys soccer team got Coach Maloney and Coach Strickland. Same goes for the girls varsity team. Coach Micah was the coach for the girls JV last season but got moved up to coach Varsity, and then we have Coach Davis who is also new to this year's girls varsity season. This is all very exciting and a lot of the girls are looking forward to it!
Aylin T. had said, “I'm excited to try out for the upcoming season and happy for Coach Micah to be coaching the girls varsity team.”
Way before conditioning started Coach Maloney had put up a lot of flyers for the boys soccer meeting they were gonna have, to talk about all the things for their upcoming season.
Once they started putting up flyers about the boys soccer meeting Andy M. quoted “I hope we have a good season and that the team is very motivated”
Chris V., a player from last year's JV team, had said, “I'm excited for the new season, but I won't be trying out for varsity for many reasons.”
When Chris V. had quoted that he wasn't going to try out for varsity because of many reasons had me questioning a lot of former JV soccer players from last year if they were going to try out also for varsity. Most of them said no. When I asked why they answered me and said “because we're not so confident it's gonna be a good season and we feel like playing on JV would be more fun,” but also their plan maybe won't work out because they could get moved up and not be allowed to play on JV because most of our varsity players graduated so there's going to be very many open spots.
But the girls are very much the opposite. We have many trying out for varsity. Hopefully, those who try out for varsity make it. Much luck to all of them!
At the end of the day if the boys and girls put effort into the season everything will be great.
High school soccer can bring many opportunities for college for students interested in it. It can be very fun playing in front of your family, friends and school staff showing them how good you are at playing a sport for your school.
