Portgas D. Ace, Son of the Pirate King and Beloved Brother It is with heavy hearts and eternal pride that we mark the passing of Ace at only age 20, died on January 5, 1522, at Marineford during the Summit War, where he sacrificed himself to protect his younger brother, Monkey D. Luffy.
Born the son of Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King himself, and Portgas D. Rouge, Ace’s very existence was a miracle one carried and protected at the cost of his mother’s life. Though born under a legacy of infamy, Ace forged his own name through strength, loyalty, and a fierce devotion to those he called family.
Ace rose to prominence as the 2nd Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, serving under the great Edward Newgate, whom he called “Oyaji” (Father).According to One Piece Wiki, Portgas D. Ace was known across the seas as “Fire Fist Ace,” a name that reflected both his power and his will.
To his brothers and crewmates, he was more than a commander; he was a beacon of passion, courage, and warmth. He fought not for fame or treasure, but to protect the people who gave him a reason to live.
Ace’s determination and compassion made him a symbol of resilience. “He showed that family isn’t just blood, it's the people who believe in you,” said AHS junior Joshua Langley, a longtime fan of the One Piece series.
Ace’s life was a blaze bright, beautiful, and all too brief. In his final moments, he smiled through the flames, protecting his younger brother, Monkey D. Luffy, and thanking his friends for loving him despite his lineage. According to Wikipedia, Ace’s last words “Thank you for loving me” have since become one of the most memorable quotes in anime history.
Fans around the world continue to honor his memory through art, cosplay, and charitable tributes. Condolences and messages of remembrance may be shared online through fan memorial pages such as One Piece Fandom. Ace is survived by his brother Luffy and the countless people he inspired. Though his life burned fast, his flame continues to light hearts across the world.
He is survived by his brother Luffy, his spiritual father Whitebeard (now also departed), and the countless pirates, allies, and admirers whose lives he ignited with his fiery heart. May the seas remember him not as the son of a legend, but as a man who burned brightly enough to light up the world.
“When you die, your flames are extinguished. But the warmth you gave others remains forever."
Ace's funeral was held on an undisclosed island in the New World, near Whitebeard's home island, after the Marineford War. The exact location has never been explicitly named. As noted by The One Piece Fandom.
