Lunch now free to all students

by Chloe W.

For the new 23-24 school year, Airport High school is now offering students free lunches. Students are having very good opinions on this new announcement.

Over the 2023 summer break the school board decided students should no longer pay for their lunches and every student will be receiving free breakfast and lunch.

This new addition to Airport High is important and big news for parents and students. Alerting them that they no longer have to pay any fees for food at school was a big deal.

McKenna P., a freshman at Airport, was interviewed on this new change and she said, “I think it's very convenient because not everyone can afford their own lunch.”

Khloe M., a junior at Airport was also interviewed on this topic and she said, "I think it's great because some students don't go home to a dinner at night."

Justin C., another freshman at Airport, was the last to be interviewed and he said, "I think its going to benefit students because they no longer have to pay."

Overall, these three students and many others have mostly positive outlooks on this new change that Airport High has made. However, some may site the phrase "there's no such thing as a free lunch," meaning that somebody is paying for kids to eat free, i.e. taxpayers. While all those interviewed for this article were in favor of the free lunch for all, others may be more critical of using tax dollars to fund this service

Many students believe this is a helpful change to Airport High School. Many also believe this is going to benefit a lot of students in positive ways.

Airport is not the only school to be hoping for this new free lunch trend; nearly 20.1 million students in the US eat free lunches. The federal government expanded that policy in March 2020, allowing schools to provide meals at no cost to all students, regardless of income, but Airport High School is just now joining this.

It's good to know Airport High School is trying to make changes for the better.
