LUCKI’S 'Days B4 III': still a hit after half a decade

By Linda I.

Airport High School students are all different in their own ways—especially when it comes to music! With many artists blasting on their phones through their headphones, LUCKI’s Days B4 III is for sure to be in their playlist rotation!

LUCKI is an American rapper from Chicago, Illinois; his music is characterized by trap beats and his iconic lazy voice. He is best known for his projects Freewave 3, FLAWLESS LIKE ME, and a lot more great albums.

The main trait of the album is the lyrics. A lot of the songs on the album show LUCKI’s ability to write deep lyrics while still keeping the music lighthearted enough to make the songs listenable regardless of what emotion you’re feeling. This is best shown on tracks like “Go Away!!!” and “Last Time Mentioning (Good Riddance).”

Another trait of the album that I always notice when listening to the album is the production. Many of the beats for the songs are very smooth and easy to listen to. I like this because many trap artists have very loud, aggressive beats so it feels refreshing to hear an artist who doesn’t have that kind of style.

This, to me, is shown best on tracks like “Randomly” and “4 The Betta” which have very catchy beats that are grouped together with good lyrics that help create really good tracks and an enjoyable listening experience.

I’m not the only one who likes the album though, many kids across the airport halls have shown their love for the album as well as LUCKI himself.

Janiyah S. a senior at AHS explains how LUCKI’s album feels like something more than just music as if the music just speaks to her in a way that is inexplicable, “ Days b4 lll has always hit me in a way I couldn’t explain, the album stays with you even after listening to it. It’s not just music, it’s more like a mood and a vibe you can’t shake off”.  Another student Arianna C. expressed how the album Days b4 lll makes her feel in a better mood, “I Love this album, it lifts my mood every time I hear it, it's relaxing, but also makes me feel more clear and focused.

While the album may be five years old, it remains a highlight in the music industry and a go-to in Airport.

Everyone has different opinions on the album, and some of those opinions have been written by critics. One example is an article on the album written from pitchfork written by Alphonso Pierre emphasize the production of the album, saying, "Lucki’s music works so well in a large part due to his ear for production, plodding hi-hats that make it feel like your brain is stuck in quicksand, and his eerie, doomsday melodies.”

Another article from Rapreviews.com, written by Ryan Feyre, praises the sound of the album, stating “Lucki’s ethereal style takes a more optimistic turn on his newest project.”

If I had to rate the album, I would give it a 7/10; it’s a really enjoyable album but it has some areas that are hard to enjoy, but other than that it’s a very solid project by LUCKI. You can listen to Days B4 III by LUCKI on Spotify and Apple Music.
