Inspirational posters populate school walls, spark conversation

By Lucy C.

This school year at Airport High School principal Mr. Schilit and assistant principal Mr. Pumphery decided together to make posters for the school walls. These posters have more information on what students are expecting of them at school. They also encourage positivity and success. They implemented this in school for many years. The posters being hung up on school walls is important as it affects students on their behavior.

Most of these posters are located in the hallways and in the cafeteria. Such as one in the cafeteria telling students what is the appropriate attire to wear with pictures of students wearing their ID’s and the appropriate attire and a few pictures of what not to wear. Another poster is in the hallway of 500 and the quote says, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.” state motivational quotes that allow students to be uplifted and feel that they can succeed.

Mr.Schilit, principal of Airport High School, states, “It started really last year with those motivational quotes that you hopefully see throughout the hallways that was a big project of ours that finally you know you came in this summer and then as you see the new additions that we just got with more logos and you know the list of things that are free for students and adults to do and just having a good attitude those kind of things it’s you know providing the environment that which in turn up after all the students here at Airport and want it to be a positive learning environment.”

Amayiah H., a senior at Airport High School, states, “I don’t really have a reaction when I see them since they’re usually a normal thing. I just think they’re cool.”

Mr.Schilit also states, “If I had to pick one thing is to pull out more Airport pride to our building and that students and faculty and staff, parents, community members, everyone that has seen it can show it off and I think automatically it’s brought more pride to our school.”

Some people believe that it does not affect them as much as seeing the posters hung up on the walls. The haters will say things like “it’s just a stupid poster” or “kids don’t even read them.”  Others think that it helps students and provides positivity and encouragement.

On the topic of motivational posters in schools, one blogger, Red17,  states, “They are visual and can capture attention for a different audience and allow them to have a long lasting effect.”

A resource from Wright State University reads, “If a poster has too much text or is not colorful or eye-catching can be  ineffective.”

Liquid Bubble states, “Posters can accommodate large amounts of information and pictures which makes them easy to see, so they’re useful to call attention to an event or to convey messages.”

In conclusion, posters can be effective if they are done correctly. If you have any ideas on the kinds of posters that should be displayed in our halls, reach out to Mr. Schilit or Mr. Pumphrey. You could even design your own and have the Media Center print it for you!
