Many people could say, “Hair could tell a story,” and personally, I agree. Some might even argue that dreads hold the most memories. Dreads, or locs, are a personal statement and, for many of us, a cultural connection. As a high school senior who’s been through the awkward phases, the “Give up” or “They’re so ugly” comments, and the moments of wanting to quit, I get it. But trust us—they can change a person, and if you want to change, tap into our article.

Step 1 – Grow about 6 inches of hair

You want at least six inches of growth because without enough hair, it will be really difficult to form your dreads properly. They might end up thin instead of thick and healthy.

Step 2 – Clean your hair thoroughly

It’s important to make sure your hair is clean so there’s no dirt buildup when the stylist is working on your hair. Clean hair ensures your dreads start off healthy.

Step 3 – Separate/part your hair

This step is the most important of your entire journey, so make sure you have someone you completely trust. How you part your hair determines how full or thick your locs will be.

Step 4 – Twist your dreads into starter locs

Step 5 – Apply holding gel to your twisted roots

You need this step because, without gel, your twisted locs could unravel and never fully form.

Step 6 – Dry your hair

Drying your hair after applying gel helps the locs set properly and ensures the style sticks.

Step 7 – Protect your hair with a durag or bonnet

Wear a durag or bonnet for a few hours to protect your hair from frizz and prevent the style from undoing. Your retwist is very vulnerable at this stage, so you don’t want anything messing up all your hard work.

Step 8 – You’re done!

In conclusion, embarking on the journey to dreadlocks is a commitment that blends patience, care, and personal expression. Regular washing, moisturizing, and protecting your locs—especially while sleeping—are essential to ensure their health and longevity. You are now part of the community, and with time, your locs will mature beautifully. Don’t give up, and have faith in the process—ignore anyone who tells you otherwise.
