Freshman share horror stories
By Erin J.
First year students at Airport High School have had many frightening experiences. Freshman were interviewed recently about their freshman horror stories. With having their first year in high school, there’s bound to be some scary stuff they go through.
One of the freshmen interviewed, Desiree S. ,said that her freshman horror story started with school bomb threats this past January and February.
Another one of the freshman interviewed, Tahlia C., said that hers was getting caught in a fight her first day.
“We were locked in classrooms for hours, no food.” Said Desiree S. about the bomb threats. She also stated, “I regret being in the arena at the time.”
“I was walking down the hallway and then girl A swung on B, C and D,” stated Tahlia C. of the fight she found herself in. “I was about to be in the middle of it.”
Both Desiree and Tahlia do not think these events could have been avoided, because according to Desiree, “Cause people are dumb.”
Fights and bomb threats are not the only cause of freshman horror stories.
Wikipedia states that vaping is likely less harmful than smoking but still harmful, and because it’s popular among teens, bathroom stalls are constantly occupied with vapers and contributing to the horrors of public high school restrooms.
Wikipedia also states that, “Highschool films from Hollywood rarely discuss the economic disparities between the social classes where the poor gravitate to the lower esteemed courses.” It is possible, based on the factoid, that additional freshman horror stories-though not mentioned by interviewees-may be based on fears that one’s poverty level may be exposed.
Despite other factors potentially being sources of horror for freshmen, fights really are the most likely. According to the YRBS, male students were significantly more likely to have been in a fight in contrast to their female counterparts.
