Former airport student talks about their first year in college so far
By Reagan S.
All throughout high school adults are encouraging us to start thinking about college. Some people want to go to college, and others don’t, but one way we can help ourselves think through what the best decision is for us is to talk to those who are there.
Adrianna O., who graduated in May of 2024, just started her freshman year at USC Beaufort. Adrianna did cross country and long distance during her senior year. She got CPR and AED certified from her health science class, and she was in orchestra her freshman year. Here is a Q&A that I recently had with her.
What made you want to go to USC Beaufort?
The reason I wanted to go there was because my sister also goes there and I knew that I wouldn’t feel as alone if I was with someone I knew. I’m also right by the beach.
What are you majoring in?
I’m majoring in public health right now with a minor in creative writing to do something in the medical field and write books.
What classes are you taking this semester?
At the moment I am taking English 101, French, student in the university (which is a class everyone has to take when they get into college), studio art, and basic health.
What is your favorite class?
My favorite class is English 101. I really like the professor, he makes the class seem really fun and he's very understanding.
What do you want to do after you graduate?
After college, if I am still pursuing a degree in nursing, then I want to go to nursing school and try to become a travel nurse. Also, hopefully I’m publishing books.
What is the campus like?
I would say life on campus is almost as Airport, just maybe twice the size. It’s a really small school. The classes are also really small, that's also why I chose this school. There are only about 20 people per class, so I knew I wouldn’t get stressed out or nervous to ask a question. It just feels more comfortable and small.
What are dorms/housing like?
This year was the biggest they've seen in years, so they had to bunk some people together. I had to bunk with other students for the first two weeks and after that I got my own room because a lot of people end up leaving. The main selling point of the school is that you get your own room as a freshman. It is apartment style housing, so you get four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room.
What is a typical day like for you?
Monday and Wednesday are the same for me, and Tuesday and Thursday are the same. I don’t have classes on Fridays, so I’m normally not doing anything. Monday and Wednesday I have my studio art class from 11pm-1pm and after that I usually try to do my public health work because that is an online class. Tuesdays and Thursdays I wake up at 7am for my student in the university class and after that class I have French. After French, I have a break for a couple hours, so I'll usually eat lunch and take a nap, then go to my English class. After English I normally chill in my room and eat dinner and do homework.
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I’m usually doing homework or watching my favorite show, Pretty LIttle Liars.
Transitioning from high school to college can be scary, but it could also introduce you to new people, new environments, and you might actually enjoy it. Go to college with an open mind and try new things.
