Fast fashion meets disappointment
By Lucy C.
Fast fashion is inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends. This issue of fast fashion is that it's still manufacturing and continuing to hurt our planet. Some people say that it’s more affordable, faster, and better for us to get what we want. Others say it damages our planet and harms us indirectly as well. People should not wear fast fashion or support the business of fast fashion.
One reason that fast fashion is problematic is it is bad for the environment. According to earth.org, “Fashion productions comprise 10% of total global carbon emissions, as much as the European union.” Another reason is the frequency of clothing ends up discarded. According to State of matter apparel states, “92 million tons of clothing end up discarded in landfills.”
The last reason fast fashion is bad is the bad working conditions and health problems for workers. According to the Common objective states, “27 million workers in fast fashion supply chains worldwide are suffering from work illnesses and diseases.
Although this impacts and harms our environment, some may say that it is more affordable and easier to produce clothing. However, there are more affordable options such as thrift shopping which allow you to find clothing that is trendy as well when someone donates it to a thrift shop. Thrift shops are produced and made from actual companies that don’t do mass production and it does not affect the planet. So you are able to buy affordable and trendy clothes while also protecting our environment.
Amaiyah H., a senior at Airport High School states, “I feel like fast fashion shouldn’t be looked down upon because it’s “cheap” since everything nowadays is so expensive.”
Though this may be the case for Amaiyah, another senior at Airport states, Trenton L., “No, because fast fashion doesn’t mean anything in particular or truly make a mark in fashion.”
Mariana C. states, “ I don’t support fast fashion. The majority of the workers are underage working long shifts with low pay.” Mariana brings up a good point regarding the problem of child labor with fast fashion.
In conclusion, there are many reasons that fast fashion is meeting disappointment throughout the world. The environment is suffering due to clothing being mass produced. Landfills are full of tossed out fabric. Workers are working in bad conditions even though their health is at risk. As many people love affordable and fresh new trends there are ways alike to get the same things without injuring the planet. Treat others the way you want to be treated with respect and that’s what we should be doing with our planet so that we all as a whole coexist.
