Dress code affects Airport High School students
by Karennalyz S.P.
Airport High School students' daily lives are continuously affected by the school's dress code, in addition the action taken by administrators to enforce this so-called dress code that is somewhat to be considered questionable.
Dress code by many is taken, enforced, and understood incorrectly, this causes this topic to be seen and considered as difficult, contradicting, racial, and out dated. In a sense the dress code is outdated due to the fact that teenagers' interest in clothing tends to change over the years.
Certain students of different backgrounds, races, and colors feel more targeted by administrators, almost as if administrators nitpicked who does and doesn't get reprimanded for their choice of clothing. Students understand that yes there is an extent to what is allowed to be worn in a school environment but they also believe they deserve the right to wear what they desire without having to be judged nor reprimanded for their preferred ways of dressing. Students-Teenagers all around the world who find themselves attending schools with dress codes believe that certain rules found in dresscode are unnecessary and almost considered to be barbaric.
In addition to that in Airport High Schools dress-code there are some rules in particular students don’t agree should be part of dress code or are in a sense are being exaggerated, the schools dress code specifically states low-cut blouses, tank tops, shorts, and ripped jeans are prohibited. Now yes students are aware that there is a limit to the length of a clothing item and if it can or can’t be worn in a school environment. For example if a low-cut blouse is above the belly button then yes that would be considered an action and clothing item to dress code as well as a short pant that rises above finger length of a person's knees.
Three different students with different backgrounds, cultures, and of color were interviewed at Airport High School each and everyone of them had the same feeling towards dress code and administrators ability in enforcing this so called dress code.
Jackie P. stated, ‘’In my opinion dress code is unnecessary, I believe that It should be clear to anyone with a right mind that they can't just walk into a public staples especially a school environment completely naked.’’ Jackie believes that it’s incredibly unnecessary to constantly remind and enforce a dress code that one makes no sense and two is just making students feel like they're mentally insufficient to understand what is and isn't appropriate attire to wear in a school setting.
Nessa T. stated, ‘’Dress code has always been directed more towards females than males, i find it crazy but no hard to believe that even still to this day females rights are continuously being diminished to fit society's standards, it's disgusting’’ There have been many occasions where males dress a certain way that should be considered a disruption to this so called ‘’dress code’’ but aren't called out for it, making this very easy for them to slide through getting amended for their choice of apparel. I find it funny how the tables turn as soon as a female tries to wear something that doesn't even come close to exceeding the dress code. It becomes a problem and administrators quickly find a way to nitpick what is and isn’t correct about their preference in clothing ending it all with receiving a dress code violation.
Dress code even as much as its over talked about and complained about somehow administrators are still incapable of finding common ground with students in trying to create a working and understandable dress code that is enforced equally for both females and males. This is important because is students and administrators are incapable of finding common ground all its causing is for ‘’students to loss interest towards the school environment diminish their priorities making student feel uncomfortable just at the thought of having to enter space where there not able to reveal and express their true self through their fashion.’’
In addition to the previews, information given here (https://www.niche.com) and here (https://conder.depual.edu) state that dress codes hinder creative expression in students and that dress code focusses more or less on what the student cannot wear to school, or in other words, what their limited to wearing.
