"Devious licks" TikTok trend storms U.S. public schools, including AHS
Earlier in September students across the country, including AHS took part in a TikTok trend where students would go around and take school items. The trend has caused a lot of tension between students and teachers because this has been costing schools a ton of money and disrupting the flow of school.
In September, schools in the U.S. learned of a new trend called "devious licks" where students record themselves stealing school property and then upload it on the internet. At first schools didn’t take full action when this trend occurred but as more items were stolen the consequences rose. Schools started cracking down on student’s who stole items and started giving extreme punishments to those who committed them.
The prank has cost schools a lot of dollars because if the student doesn’t get caught then whatever they stole might never be recovered. Schools started to put locks on items and put restrictions on how many people can go to certain places at a time. In some schools they started offering money to rat people out so they could get the item back.
In Florida, a school named Marion county high school, kids were being expelled and getting involved with law enforcement for committing this. There have been many items stolen that include soap dispensers, sinks, toilets, fire alarms, clocks, and etc. . All of these stolen items can cost schools major money and if the school doesn’t get much funding, it might make some of those items irreplaceable for the time being.
Mark S. said this about the trend while being interviewed: “The trend is funny and all but I think it’s stupid.” Mark also stated that “I’ve seen buses, soap dispensers, urinals, fire alarms, and phones being stolen so far.”
There are many people who think this trend is funny and not so serious but those who think that are mainly young. Adults have different views on this because they see it as theft which is illegal and they think it should stop and that there should be consequences for people who steal these items.
