Black man Tyre Nichols brutally beaten to death by Memphis police; AHS students react

A hot topic at Airport High School currently is the recent murder of Tyre Nichols. Tyre Nichols, a 29 year old black man, was brutally beaten to death by Memphis police following a traffic stop which alleged that he was recklessly driving. The incident took place on January 7, 2023 and Tyre sadly passed three days after fighting for his life, which ended on January 10th 2023. Since video of Nicholes beating surfaced later that month, students at AHS have been discussing the incident.


On January 7, 2023 the world in anger and sorrow again after the news of the late 29 year old black male Tyre Nicholes. Police brutality hits again and this time itś worse than before. On January 7 Mr. Nichols was pulled over during a routine traffic stop and told that he was reckless driving. Three days later, he died in the hosiptal. His cause of death was “extensive bleeding caused by severe beating,” according to preliminary autopsies issued by the families attornies. For several weeks the actual events occurring prior to when Mr. Nichols was hospitalized reamined unclear, that is when the body cam footage went viral.


On January 28, the body camera footage from the five officers responsible for Nichols death was released, giving the full reality of the situation. Five officers from the Memphis Police department named (Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith) were on duty that day. According to some accounts this whole thing was a setup. According to CNN News the police that were called were in on this setup and had already had bad intentions especially with Nicholes.


"Worrying about safety but trying to stay strong especially when I know it can happen to me now or when I'm older," is where one student, Nia G.'s head, is currently at. Other students continue to be worried as well.
