Beta Club induction letters get handed out
by Ava C.
Teachers around Airport High are passing out limited Beta Club inventions.
One of the teachers, Mrs. Atkins, only handed out one Beta Club invitation to her students; the way invitations worked is that the Beta Club sponsors gave each 1st block teacher letters to pass at to qualifying students. Being that Mrs. Atkins teachers a predominately freshmen class first block, her invitations were few. These Beta Club invitations are extremely hard to get considering one needs a 3.67+ GPA to even be considered to get an invitation.
Beta Club members have very high expectations to follow and if they don't then they will be removed. Beta Club members are required to participate in three community service activities per semester, maintain a 3.5 GPA, go to every meeting, fundraiser, and community service activities or they will be put on probation.
On top of all of that they need to have standards in academics/ character, they also need to be a positive role model in their school as well as their communities. If the students of beta club get less than three credits for two consecutive semesters then they will have to be removed from beta club along with national rosters without getting an invention back.
If the student gets any Category 1 or 2 offense even if it is your first time on beta club, you will be released from Senior beta club. Even if you don’t get a category 1 or 2 offense but you have continuous discipline issues the same thing will happen. Other than that if you get below a 3.5 unweighted GPA then you will also be released immediately.
One student invited to join the club, Izzy, said, “ I'm going to do it because like I did it in 8th grade and it was fun.” She also said “You help people plus look good on your college application or even jobs.”
Another student, Lucy, said, “I got an invitation last year but I didn't join because I feel like I wouldn't be able to keep myself up to their standards.”
Back in 1934 is when it was first invented to show off the students who have worked extremely hard through their entire school career. Beta Club is to show that students will up tain their grades as well as strong moral character and social responsibility. Over 80 years have passed since the original starting beta club and it has still held up to the original standards.
The National Beta Club was founded January 8, 1934 at Landrum High School by Dr. John West Harris, faculty member at Wofford College. He worked to develop something for the youth to show leadership and achievements. This club being in place honors the students that have all the achievements that a “perfect” child has.
Financial requirements for Beta Club are minimal. First year dues come with a cost of $35. Beside that, it is $5 every other year. Students get to choose to donate $20 during one of our big fundraisers in order to get credit for it without actually having to sell anything.
More information about Beta Club can be got from Mrs. Altman, currently the lead sponsor of this club.
