'Barbie' review

by Donterron G.

Airport students are very involved and maybe even obsessed with the Barbie movie that came out over the summer. We even had a recent Barbie-themed dress up day. The movie gives women and young girls an outlook on women's empowerment and standing up for themselves in the real world. The movie is for all ages to watch and can be watched by all genders.

The movie is about women standing up for themselves and going against society and how they think women should be treated. During the beginning of the movies you can see how women can be taken advantage of and aren't as free to speak up for themselves. While still having fun and being bubbly, Barbie and her friends continue to have fun and enjoy their lives until things start to take a turn for the worse. Barbie and her friends start to actually feel their feelings and real life things like jumping from their houses and pouring milk into their cereal. Barbie and her friends start to see how they are manipulated and taken advantage of. They later go to one of the older Barbies to even exist to get information about their diagnoses, while giving Barbie the information she asks for, Barbie later figures out that she'll have to go to the real world. While confused about the existence of the real world and what she'll find there she has no choice but to travel there.

Barbie later goes on her solo trip to the real world but later finds out that the trip isn't so solo, ken pops up in the back! Barbie makes it to the real world and goes to the cooperation of where barbies are made. The maker of the Barbie, more so like the manager but not the owner of the company, tries to get Barbie to stay in her natural Barbie state but she plans to discover more about the background of everything. During Ken's time in the real world he realizes that he loved to be there and enjoyed it very much. The message for men in this movie would be to be true to themselves and learn to make their own decisions without women by their side. Later in the real world Barbie and Ken get chased by guards of the cooperation when she later meets a mom and her daughter. In the long run they arrive back to Barbie world and gather all the barbies to discuss previous events while in the real world. The barbies, mother and daughter have a heartfelt conversation and Barbie later finds out that she was the mothers Barbie she used to play with.

My opinion about the movie is that it promoted a positive message about gender equality. Everybody should have equal rights. Women and men should be able to think for themselves and do what makes them happy. Society casts a big spell on how people should spend their time and what rights certain people should have when everything should be equal. Gender plays a big part in the movie and the real world, men mainly get looked at to do what they want and women have to tone it down a bit and don't get to make certain decisions. I like how the movie allowed Barbie to tap into her mind and actually dig deep into how she feels about herself and everything else she feels. While it also allowed the men to stand up for themselves and realize what they want and not to rely on women. In the ending of the movie Barbie meets the actual maker of Barbie and gets told to live up to her means and to find herself, that was my favorite part of the movie while she later made a life for herself in the real world along with other Barbies.

The outfits and fashion within the movie alone were iconic and made by some of the top designer icons in the world. The Barbie movie was estimated at $145 million dollars while it was originally $100 million but went up in cost. Barbie took the box office by storm with earning more than $1.38 billion, it became one of the highest grossing films in Warners Bros history and the highest grossing film by a female. The costumes were made by Jacqueline Durran, the award winning designer, she styled some of the most memorable looks in the past decade. The outfits were very vibrant and of course Barbie's signature color pink, even Ken was dressed in some of the iconic looks in the movie. Critics loved the colors and costumes in the movie, some around the world even dressed similar to the cast in the movie.

Song choices for the movie raised an eye with the iconic song Barbie World (with Aqua) by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice which debuted No.7 on the Hot billboard 100., The song had more sales and ratings than the original Barbie song and the song has spent weeks on the charts. Songs by artists such as Billie Ellish, Lizzo, and Dua Lipa were also featured in the movie. Cast over gave us musical scenes in the movie for people to sing along to.

Regarding what other students have to say, one classmate said, “ The Barbie movie was bright and colorful with amazing music choices. Another stated, “ Barbie had heartfelt moments and taught them a lesson in self discovery.

One critic say, “Lessons were taught in the movie if you payed attention it was more than just a Barbie having fun and being bubbly.” Another states, “People should take in the real outlook on the movie and how society has made things for both women and men, “being true to yourself is the only way to stay happy and sane in this world.”

Overall I give the movie a 8/10, you can watch the movie on any platform but Netflix.
