Barbering students give back to community

by Savannah C.

On September 9, 2023, the Juniors and Seniors, a part of the Lexington Two Innovation Center’s barbering program, cut hair for the less fortunate at St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Students in this program are learning to apply what they learn in the classroom to real world scenarios.

The barbering class felt a strong impact by those around them due to the life advice and genuine connection that was given to them while cutting hair.

Throughout their time in class, Barbering instructor Mr. Henderson has helped encourage students and genuinely listen to what they are going through while at school as well as in their personal lives.

When interviewed about her experience, Barbering student Hazia B., was asked how she thinks helping those who are less fortunate will help her and other classmates grow as leaders. She said, “This will help me and my classmates build character, and teach us that this job isn't just about money. It is all about putting a smile on peoples face even in difficult times.”

It is obvious that as these students learn each day, they strive to gain characteristics that can impact not only their future but others as well.

Being a role model is an important trait to have. When asked how this act of service influences other students Hazia said, “It shows that it doesn't always need to be a big thing to make other people's day better. It shows other students that small acts of kindness matter.”

Elias G., Another barbering student was asked how what he and other students learn in class connects to the real world. He said, “We learn how to go about things, the way holding yourself accountable every moment of the day can benefit you in the long run. Somebody is always watching you, and making mental notes. We learn new things in the shop everyday in order for us to elevate even higher, the same way life teaches you from your mistakes so that you can come back better than ever."

Students feel like this is a great opportunity for the barbering program because it gives them a great way to use their skills and gain practice. Many students feel that this is an inspiring and helpful way to give back to the community.

In South Carolina, an estimated 3,608 people experienced homelessness on a single night. St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Matthew, and St. Vincent de Paul Churches combine together in order to form a Homeless Relief Ministry. This Homeless Relief Ministry is just one of the many ways people in the community can give back in order to help those in need.
