Are teachers doing all they can? This journalists says "no"
At Airport High School everyone has had their fair share of experiences with not-so-great teachers. Of course there are many great teachers at our school, but some need to improve the quality of their instruction and also the level of care they show towards their students. If teachers understand this, school will go a lot better.
Sadly, not every teacher will make an effort to make sure students do well in their class. Some teachers just do the bare minimum to get their check, but when a teacher doesn’t make an effort it will only bring the students down. A statistic by USNews.com was shown that only 35% of teachers are really committed and enthusiastic about their jobs. Students don't need nonchalant teachers. Sometimes we do need the extra push to take responsibility for our own work, but that is not a reason for teachers to just completely neglect a student's need for actual teaching and help.
Students actually like being pushed to be better. I recently overheard a conversation, however, that suggested that some teachers are doing the exact opposite of pushing students. In the conversation one of the teachers stated that she does not push their students because it is not “realistic” to do so. The reasoning for this is because when their students grow to be adults, that push is not going to be there. In reality high school students are still kids. We need that push but with a guiding hand. The young people are only young for so long. So that is the exact reason teachers should push students now. Later in life, people won't be there for them as much as they are in high school.
One former student from Airport high school Jaylen G. stated, “I don't feel like they did all they could have in my time being there. This opinion shows that past students have experienced teacher neglect.
Another student, Montrell C., stated the opposite and says he just feels like “they just do what they can." He elaborated, "I mean, their intentions are pure, but they all just carry it out differently.”
In sum, not all students feel the same way about teachers. The different feelings are probably because they have had different experiences and different teachers.
The carry out of the lesson is different with each teacher, but teachers can make students more interested by adding hands-on activities into the lesson, making things relatable or explaining why they are going to need the information in the future, or give activities for students to do. School is for learning but that doesn't mean that students have to be bored all day. Make them excited to be there and get up and come every morning. If teachers relate to students more and communicate better, school will be better with students and the teachers.
