Airport students react to teachers helping them sign up for next year's classes
by Brandis S.
This year at Airport High School, students are getting to be more physically active in choosing their classes this year. Both teachers and students express concern that they are doing both the jobs of the teacher and counselor.
This topic is interesting because you would think when it comes to students choosing their classes our administrators would want us to have help from an individual that was actually trained for that.
A guidance counselor would usually individually pull students to have an IGP meeting which is where they discuss general graduation requirements, coursework, opportunities related to future goals, and eventually pick their classes for the next school year.
With the teachers taking on this job this year, how can students help but not to worry if they could potentially mess up their chances of getting all their credits and being able to graduate their senior year.
Then again, some may not question it. Statistics state that students should choose their own classes based on their interests and doing so could contribute to overall success and personal development. The content of the course that the student has picked is proven to have an impact on overall student performance.
"They expect us to do this based on 25 minutes of training," said one Airport High School math teacher, laughing sarcastically.
"It may not be easy, but we can do it as long as we do it together and questions are asked," says Mrs. Mooneyham, a biology teacher at AHS.
"This is kind of confusing to me as well, but you guys can always ask your other teachers what they know," Miss Boviage tells the class, a social studies teacher here at Airport.
Some may say that teachers and students are overlooking the situation, or that maybe they just wanted to try something new.
