Airport star WR Apollos Cook commits to Duke
By Jackson W.
Airport wide receiver Apollos Cook committed to Duke in June of 2022.He officially signed to Duke at Airport in December.
Apollos played his first few years of high school football at River Bluff but he decided to transfer to Airport for his last year. This ended up a great decision as he had the best year of his high school career since transferring.
Apollos was a three-star wide receiver on 247sports.com and was ranked the 27th best wide receiver in the state. He was also the 214th ranked wide receiver in the nation according to the platform.
Apollos had a ton of offers from many other Division one schools such as Charlotte, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and West Virginia. He ended up ultimately signing with Duke. Duke was the best team on this list and a top team in the ACC.
In the 22-23 season Apollos had 40 receptions for 785 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also had 2 touchdowns from rushing. He also had 391 total return yards from kicks and punts.
Apollos is one of the best recruits Airport High School has had since Paxton Brooks in 2017 who was one of the top punters in the country. Paxton was recruited to Tennessee so he also played at the power 5 level. Post college, Paxton is hoping to be drafted or sign to a NFL team. Hopefully Apollos has as good if not better college playing career as Paxton.
I interviewed a Brookland Cayce High School student, Chase P,and an Airport High School varsity offensive lineman, Cooper L, were interviewed about Apollo's commitment to Duke.
“He could be able to catch high passes over smaller defensive backs”, said Cooper L.
Chase P said that, “Apollos has a lot of upside“ and that Apollos “could be a valuable piece for Duke's offense.”
“He’ll be able to beat defenders with his speed,“ said Cooper L,“ he’ll be outmuscle them when the ball is in his hands”
Clearly, Apollos has a lot of upside to his game and that he could be a good player in college and help Duke achieve success.
