Airport’s new bathroom signs warn against vaping

By Marissa B.

Recently at Airport High School, two students--Marissa B. and Jahnee P.-- wrote an article entitled “ Students stressed from school disorganization and crowding,” which was about the lack of organization resulting from overcrowded bathrooms, chronic fights, and so forth.  One of the main reasons cited for bathroom chaos were vapers. Not so long after the article was posted on The Eyrie, there were new signs posted around Airport’s bathrooms saying things along the lines of “no smoking” and “don't gather all in the big stalls,” and “one person per stall.”

The bathroom posters were posted up a couple weeks ago, which is probably because of the article and the complaints; students smoking and gathering all around in stalls or in the restrooms, although the signs are hanging up students, does not appear to be helping, as many kids still don't take it seriously. The bathrooms are still crowded and have various scents and odors from smoking, vaping, etc.

A while ago, in the girls restroom there were multiple students caught vaping and smoking that got caught and had to get searched, then not so long after that another student who shall remain nameless had got caught and suspended when they went into the restroom and caught him smoking.

All restrooms should not be crowded and having people smoking in them. Some students are going to the bathroom to use them and not do these things. Some students are also getting in trouble or having D-notes and also tardies for being late to class or taking to long just because the bathrooms are crowded which are stopping other students from using the restrooms. Limiting bathroom use is not helpful at all since students who vape or use drugs can go somewhere else hidden to do their illegal activities since most school campuses are fairly large.

Many students and stakeholders believe that teachers and staff should work together with the students to help them break from  these addictive and unhealthy habits.

According to information found online, “Kids crowd the bathrooms in large groups between periods and even during the middle of class. At my previous school, security gave up within a month into each year as suspending a dozen students at once reflects poorly on the school itself, especially in a privileged area that claims a high standard of education (which is a lie like most schools). Because of this, schools resort to providing a very limiting amount of washrooms available to the students for use.”

Most of the students claim that it is hard to use bathrooms and a crowded restroom with people doing negative things. This can affect students by them being late to class or getting in trouble.

One student said that he thinks that the airport high school bathroom signs are reasonable but students still don't prevent them from smoking and crowding the big stalls.

Another student said that every time she goes to the bathroom she sees that the bathroom is crowded and it's stopping her from going to the bathroom because all the other students are  doing other things but using the restrooms.

The non-vapers want it to be clear: Stop vaping in school bathrooms now.
