Student government, and with the help of staff, will be hosting the homecoming dance at Airport High School and it will be taking place in the old gym. The dance will occur  September 27 7:30: - 10:00 PM.

This year's theme is “A Hollywood Night to Remember.” For our school Mrs. Martinez usually chooses out a list of themes for students to choose from and she also decorates. Students are encouraged to wear an outfit that follows the theme of Hollywood Night wearing something someone would wear if they were in Hollywood on a red carpet showing all the confidence and showing who you are!.

Students will compete to see who will be this year's homecoming queen and king. The voting is usually posted up in social media and on Gmail to choose this year's homing queen and homecoming king. The king and queen are determined to show their best and get everyone's vote to win the place and convince you're a good homecoming king and queen. The votes will then be announced when the event is taking place ( at the old gym) and when the night is almost about to end then they will announce who won leaving everyone in the event surprised and excited.

Each year, there is a different homecoming theme to vote on, and there will be a homecoming queen and king by the end of the night.

To give more background information, homecoming is a tradition celebrated by educational institutions to welcome back former students and inspire school spirits. According to Wikipedia, The tradition of homecoming started at colleges and universities in the early 1900s. One of the most commonly cited origin stories is from the University of Missouri in 1911, when alumni were invited back for a big football game, parade, pep rally, etc. The theme for this year's homecoming is not out yet but it will be soon making students curious on what it's going to be.

The homecoming dance may put stress on the student government. Putting the event together can get wild and create chaos, both in preparation of and at the actual event, but that's not new for Airport High School Overall, students are more excited than stressed about the homecoming and have fun in the event when it happens..

Haylee C. (sophomore), a student at Airport who attended the homecoming last year said, ‘’It was very fun but also kind of messy and people didn't really follow the theme.’’

“I love the decorations!, I love the music! But last year there were no people so I expect more this year,”  said Yarelin O, a sophomore student that has been to a variety of homecoming dances.

“ It was messy, but really fun though. The food was good and I hung out with all my friends,” said Heridania V., also a sophomore, who attended the homecoming dance last year.

While homecoming dances are getting popular, like everything the prices of tickets are rising. According to one high school, tickets to homecoming dances rose up to 33% between the past 2021 and 2024. This year, the price of tickets for our dance for pre-sale is $12 for singles and for couples it would be $18. Make sure to order your tickets for pre-sale to go on GoFan or in cash to Mrs. Martinez. Furthermore For the prices for when you're at the door for singles there are going to charge $15 for singles and couples are $22.

According to https://today.yougov.com 44% of high school students attend homecoming dances, and 67% say it was a very or somewhat personally important event to the high schoolers.

Homecoming will be a blast for all students and for the new freshmen and former students.  For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Mrs. Martinez, whose classroom is located in The Nook on the 500 hall.
