AI taking over; mother, son react
by Serena M.
Recently, more and more students have been using AI software programs to cheat and complete their work at school. On September 29, Amanda Rainey and her son were interviewed over the phone. This is how it all played out.
AI has become an undeniable part of our future; the advancements and how far we have come proof of that. AI may be taking away jobs and is becoming a huge part of our everyday lives. From an interview between a CNA and a student, both make bold claims about what they think of artificial intelligence.
For students who want to have a job someday, particular AHS students, this may play out horribly for them. They’d have their future in jeopardy, their hard work would land in the gutter. It’s a terrible thought and we should do something to stunt the growth of AI and put more limits on it.
When asked about what Amanda thought of AI and what it meant for the future, she stated: “ We are putting ourselves in a position where Ai is actually going to take over, like, our jobs and everything else. People are becoming obsolete because computers are doing everything for us. So I don’t think it’s beneficial in that aspect at all.”
When the two were confronted with what they thought this would mean for the future; they elaborated on both the positives and negatives of the circumstances. They both had good and negative things to report.
The student stated his clear disapproval of the consumption of jobs AI had taken. Both having to admit that they didn’t inquire much about conspiracies, however. “I think it is beneficial. Definitely. There’s a lot of things we can’t do, like, consistently or well every time. So I think in some ways it could be beneficial, but there’s also other things I don’t think should be completely automated like driving for example.” The student admitted when facing the issue.
“I think AI might be able to develop to the point where they can understand,” her son stated when confronted with the idea of AI developing emotional intelligence. “Like facial expressions and maybe tell other things on the internet. They can recognize tones and noises or stress and sadness.” but he denied the possibility of experiencing emotion.
The son had admitted to recalling that many of his classmates would be caught using an app called chat GPT, something students used to cheat themselves into a better grade. His mother shared similar concerns. Using the app chat GPT students have been reported to simply ask the bot a question on their assignment and it would initiate a reply immediately.
The CNA announced that she was unconvinced artificial intelligence could take over writing and her son agreed. They both had a shared belief that artificial intelligence lacked emotion and empathy.
Though they admitted to this. They did, however, both admit they could see chances of artificial intelligence assisting writer’s in their workplace. They still did not believe that they would take over the jobs of writing though.
When asked if they thought an AI takeover was plausible they both rejected the idea. They considered that AI simply did not have what it takes, but did pronounce skeptics.. Claiming they had doubt about our future if we keep giving artificial intelligence the power over us that they already have. Our society as a whole is dependent on technology.
Though people have been put out of business by this one CNA states that her handheld and manual work would not be able to be performed by AI. She states that it’s hard to believe a simple robot would be capable of that, if ever.
In relevance to the importance of AI and how they will affect our future,; the student states it would be a good idea to put robots instead of humans in hospitals because they are more precise than humans could ever dream to be. That it ensures the safety of each individual.
The student claims AI could be beneficial to the future, but does not like the thought of AI taking over the majority of jobs. He reasonably believes that it would resort to an outbreak.
His mother admits to indulging the idea of being a baker, and when brought to the surface if she thought AI would be able to perform in that sort of workplace, stated briefly that she thought that it was unlikely. That AI lacked basic creativity that baking requires.
The two noted how AI could affect the socialization skills of others, students already suffering from this drastically.
Some apps, like mathpapa, allow students to take a screenshot that will in turn get the AI to deliver an answer.
Both have stated they see AI as beneficial to the future, if handled correctly, believing there should be some restrictions. However, they both disbelieve in the fact of AI conquering our universe.
