AHS Girls 4x1 track team places 2nd in first meet
by Ja'sia B.
On Wednesday night, the Airport High Schools Track Team competed in their first track meet of the season at Irmo High Schools field stadium. Their competitors were schools like Lugoff Elgin, Dutch Fork, Westwood and South Aiken. This meet was important because it was the season starter and set the tone for the Eagles future meets to come.
While track conditioning began in late January many students were unable to attend due to other in season sports. So the returning students coming from other sports had a little more than 4 weeks to get into the groove of things.
The Airport's 4x1 team had only 3 practices to prepare to make sure they had “clean, quick exchanges,” said Na’asia H., the 4th leg on the 4x1 team.
Henderson states that “the 1st and 3rd leg are the most important… they have to really make sure they use the curb to their advantage.”
During the 4th legs portion of the race Henderson works hard to make sure the Eagles place in the event.
“When I’m running I’m just thinking about getting to the finish line,” Henderson said, sharing what goes through her mind during a race.
Iyanna Henderson, the 3rd leg of the 4x team shares that she is nervous “on how well she will perform” but she just tells herself “to do my best and make sure I run my hardest.”
Their time was 52.55 overall. Which placed them second behind Lugoff Elgin, whose time was 52.46.
Many fans believed that the meet was entertaining and interesting due to the amount of competition faced. The track and field coach was also impressed by the number of personal records set by his players.
Later on in the meet the boys 4x1 team placed 4th with a time of 44.80. Giving the Eagles 5 points to their score. The next track meet will be held March 15, 2023 at Lower Richland High School.
