AHS Chorus cut off at pep-rally

By Valeria P.V.

Airport High School’s chorus performance was cut off by a sudden commotion before they could even begin at the coming home pep-rally on January 27, 2023.

With the whole student body present, the bleachers filled to the brim with excited students enjoying the activities such as the balloon challenges and JROTC performance. Following JROTCs performance was the school's chorus setting up, ready to sing Alma Mater. Waiting for the students to settle down after the previous performance were the chorus members: ready to perform and excited for their moment to show their skills after practicing and preparing for this moment for so long. Their moment however never came because just as the students never settled down, attention shifted off the chorus onto the basketball court and to the bleachers.

Distraction was rumored to have been in between a fight or some PDA caught by police officers. The real reason for the distraction is unknown, however.

Nevertheless the uproar of students was managed and they were ordered back to classes with not only the pep-rally cut short but the chorus members robbed of their performance.

A chorus member was asked how she felt when she noticed people weren’t looking at the chorus but at a pile of students she said she felt “very disrespected”.

After she found out about the rumors it amplified the annoyance she already had against those saying “Why would you do that at a pep rally? Everyone was just trying to have fun and we just wanted to entertain them with a performance.”.

At their next concert, an overnight one in Greenville, they felt redeemed after missing out on their first one cause this one was “fun and emotional.”.

Students have expressed that they were upset after the pep-rally. One even said “...I was really disappointed…that the actions of a few students ruined the pep rally for everyone.” showing just how much our students were looking forward to it.

Since the students missed out on seeing our chorus perform you can catch them on March 2 at the SC All State in Winthrop University.
