A day in the life of a high school principal

Mr. Matt Schillit Is our new principal at Airport High School. He was raised in Connecticut. He arrived in the South when he went to college at University of South Carolina, after which he began his teaching career in South Carolina. He continued to be a teacher in Lexington County District 2 and later accomplished his goal of becoming a principal. This year he furthers his career at Airport High School. He is definitely making a difference! The question is: What does he do all day?

When being the principal at Airport High School, there is never a dull moment and no such thing as typical day. However, Mr. Schilit was able to provide a general outline of his daily routine.

7:30 - Mr.Schilit arrives at Airport High School. He checks his email, and talks to administrators, and checks what teachers are here and what teachers are absent .

8:40 - All students are released to class, He walks around the halls and makes sure everything is smooth, and he attends meetings if scheduled.

9:00 -1:00 - Classroom observations; more meetings with people.

12:25 -2:20 - Attends first and second lunch; talks to students and teachers.

2:30 - Touch base with administrators; walks around the halls of school.

2:50 - Dismissal for students

Aside from what he does each day, students and stakeholders should know that our new principal is outgoing and a very easy person to talk to.

According to other sources, principals have loads of other responsibilities than just what we see them doing around the school. While Mr. Schilit did not speak on these topics himself, it is likely he also spends substantial time developing standardized curricula, assess teaching methods, monitoring student achievement, encouraging parent involvement, revising policies and procedures, administering the budget, hiring and evaluating staff and overseeing facilities.

Being a principal isn’t an easy task. Preparing the next generation takes time and commitment.

Overall, Mr. Schillit Is never doing the exact same things everyday. He is very flexible with his schedule so he can make sure the school runs smoother for all.

Next time you see him in the halls, be sure to tell him "hi"!
