A day in my life as an AHS cosmetologist student

by Delaina H.

As a cosmetology student, this is like a job for us. Every morning we must clock in and clock out and we must get a total of 3 hours every day. By the end of the year we will need a certain amount of hours completed in order to move on to the next level. We also have to have a grade above 75 to pass as well. If we miss any hours then we must make them up on the Saturday of the first month that the teacher provides us to come to.This is a class where you start your junior year and finish your senior year. The class is split into two periods.your junior year will be your 1st and 2nd block, and your senior year will be your 3rd and 4th block.Once you have the knowledge on different hairstyles you get a clinic sheet that has the different hairstyles, and the teacher will give you a certain amount of hairstyles you have to get signed off for that week.

Once we walk in the classroom we greet the teacher with a “Good morning”, while also on the way to clock in for the day. We sit in the classroom and prepare for the day until 8:40. After that the teacher takes attendance and announces what we are doing that day and week. As well as upcoming events. Once the announcements are done we start writing our notes for the chapter we are on, which right now is Chapter 17 on roller set, updos, flat iron and thermal marcel irons. We do note till about 9:50 and review the chapter with questions the teacher asks for the next 10 minutes. This is what our first half of class consists of.

By 10:05 we would already have our things set up on the salon floor and the choices to go on break for 15 minutes or not. If we go on break you must clock out if you leave the classroom.

After break we come back in and work on our clinic sheet which has a different hairstyle that we choose to get signed off on. Before doing the style we must wash the hair properly, blow dry, then style as it says on the clinic sheet. We must finish these hairstyles within the class period. By the end of the week we should have a number of sign offs the teacher provides, which is 5 most of the time but could go up or down any new week.

When 11:14 hits everyone must pack up the salon materials and do the duty they are assigned for the week as well. If the duty is not done then you will get 5 points of your daily grade or your clinic sheet.

At 11:35 everyone clocks out and is on their way back to their school.

This is what a day in the life of an AHS cosmetology student consists of.

Now if you are interested in being creative with hair, makeup, nails or pedicures then this class is definitely for you. You have to sign up for this your sophomore year, so when your junior year comes around you'll be able to get into the class and go on from your junior year to your senior year.

If your someone who doesn't submit work on time and is late then this class might not be for you because two of the major things you must get in this class is your grade in all your classes must be good and your grade in cosmetology must be above a 75, and you have to get up to a certain amount of hours in order to stay in the class.

When going into cosmetology you have to keep up with the latest trends so that if you have a client who wants what's new you'll be prepared and know what they want. In this class we'll be going to a natural hair show to see what is new with hair and makeup.

Cosmetology is a lot more than makeup and hair. Students taking the course have intense training on braids, nail arts, luxury manis and pedis too. It takes tons of studying to understand and practice the procedure of doing each subject in cosmetology. Notes are very helpful when it comes to the training and studying part of cosmetology.
