First ELearning day coming up
ELearning is a brand new concept being introduced to Airport High School this school year. It has its flaws but overall it’s a great concept to be introduced to our school.
ELearning is a brand new concept being introduced to all Lexington 2 schools. It diminishes the need for makeup days due to weather incidents. We are going to use the district issued iPads to complete the work at home, rather than going to school.
Lexington District 2 is one of 10 districts in South Carolina that was chosen to pilot this concept. These ten districts are being added to five districts who began using ELearning last year creating 15 total. The hope is to have all schools in South Carolina run this program to completely eliminate the need for make up days.
ELearning is developed from online schooling, which began in the late 20th century. The very first use of online schooling was in 1989 at the University of Phoenix, but after the first web browser was created in 1993 by the University of Illinois, online schooling really took off. ELearning is what online schooling has evolved into.
As far as this reporter can tell, South Carolina is the only state so far to institute an ELearning concept in the context of making up days due to weather, thus creating a brand new standard for schools around the country.
Airport High School is doing their Elearning through Google Classroom. This makes it very easy to do as long as students have an internet connection at home. Student simply login and the assignments are ready to use.
If you don’t have internet at home, you should still be able to complete the assignments. All you have to do is download the documents and make them available offline when you are connected to the internet.
The first official day scheduled to be an ELearning day is November 11th. Counting attendance for that day is simple. The work assigned to you for that day must be completed and turned in within the following three days in order to be counted as present.
Caryn, a student at Airport, said, “I think it's a good idea but they need to try and get it to work smoothly and make it less confusing.”
“I think we should just make the days up at school,” said another student at Airport named Isabella.
Mr. Adams, a teacher at Airport High School said,”I definitely think this is a good idea. It puts responsibility on the students to complete their work and doesn't extend the school year by the days missed during inclement weather.”
