Student Government has new freshman president

The school year has started and that means new student government officers. The week of September 9, four students ran for the role of freshman president: Elizabeth Schaffer, Kaden Peteja, Janna Lindler and Alyssa Hardy. The winner was announced September 13, and her name is Alyssa Hardy.

On September 13, every candidate was suspicious of each other. No one had known for sure who would win. A rule was placed that no one could campaign on September 13th, the day of voting.

The freshmen were at the edge of their seats watching the clock, either eager to leave or to find out the results. Then the time came principal Damm’s voice rang out above the students as Damm left the president for last. Finally, he said the winner: Alyssa Hardy

Although people are conflicted with the results it was an overall good outcome. Each candidate had fun campaigning.

Although campaigning was a small portion of picking the president it held importance. The other percentage went to an interview, an essay, the council voting, and any background information.

Two of the candidates Elizabeth Schaffer (14) and Kaden Peteja (14) were available for interviews. A series of questions about the results, campaigning, and the role of the president were asked.

Each candidate that I interviewed took the interview seriously and didn't joke around. They each answered with lengthy responses.

Regarding the responsibilities of the president, Kaden responded, “They need to be a good leader and put the people under them above them and they need to represent the freshman class.” Elizabeth said, “The president has to chair a certain amount of fundraisers, plan meetings, and represent the freshman class.” When asked how they fit those responsibilities, both responded the same: that they have had experience in the past.

All of the candidates that lost were still sworn into office, so they still play an important role in student council.
