New breezeways under construction, almost complete
Airport High School is renovating their breezeways from the 100 hall all the way to the 400 hall. The breezeway has been under construction for awhile now.
The breezeways has been under reconstruction since the beginning of summer break of 2019 and is still not finished. Students are starting to get frustrated with the breezeway not finished. Students from the 600 hall aren’t able to go through the breezeway in order to go in the 100 hall. The hallways are being packed with students trying to get to class on time yet they aren’t able to make it on time.
The interesting part of this whole breezeway being built is students can't go fast to their classrooms. It affects them by delaying their arrival to class. Many students have been complaining of not being able to get to class on time. Coming to the 600 hall and making its way to the 100 hall isn't fast. Usually from the 100 hall to the 600 hall it takes around 3-4 minutes if students go to a normal speed. Now that the breezeways are under construction it takes more than five minutes to get to either side of the halls. They now makes students go outside if they have to go to the 100 hall and come from the 600 hall. It supposedly reduces their time and it makes less pack the 500 hall. The only problem is that students still can’t get to class in time. It does it make it less crowded but it doesn't help that there is only five minutes to get to class and it takes more than 5 minutes to get to the other end of the school.
It’s been almost four months and the progress of the breezeways is slow. Mr. Damm had been told the breezeway would be finished by the end of August, but now it is the start of October. There is no sign of the breezeway being finished at any time now. Many students and teachers believe that the breezeway won’t finish until late October or early November.
Jala, a senior of Airport High School, said, “I hope they finish faster. They need to hurry up.” Many other students think exactly like her. They believe the breezeway has been taken too long to build and the process has to hurry up.
Jala also said, “It takes me forever to get to class.” She is one of many students who can’t get to class on time and sometimes she can but with a few minutes sparing. It wouldn’t be fair if students get marked tardy because they have to take the long way to class.
Samantha, also a student, said, “It takes away the fresh air.” There has been seen that the new breezeways have now windows. Students have different opinions on what they think of the windows being placed. Many students think that the breezeway was just fine how it was before.
Most students don’t agree that rebuilding the breezeway is a good idea. They think there are other things that could’ve been rebuild instead of the breezeways. For example, many of the girls bathrooms don't have the best lock for the stalls. Those doors should have a good lock for the stalls.
There are students out there who think that there is a reason why it's taking longer to rebuild the breezeway. There are online manuals of how to build breezeways and what exact measurements there should be. Usually the manual is directed for a certain school or place the breezeway is going to be built. The constructors building the breezeway probably have a manual to follow and it tells how to build it in order for it to be as perfect as possible.
There is a website online that can tell people about how much a certain breezeway cost to build. It doesn’t have all the breezeways that have been or are being built but there are some examples of the prices for a specific breezeway build years back. For example, a breezeway for Deshler High School was built in early February of this year. The cost of it was around $399,999 so almost $400,000. It's not cheap to build a breezeway and based on that estimation of how much it cost then anyone that isn't part of the working crew can predict that the whole breezeway probably cost around one million dollars. Now that the new breezeways has windows placed it makes since that it would cost around a million dollars.
Administrators feel the breezeways are worth it despite the costs. Many students in years past would leave campus during lunch by way of the breezeways. Furthermore, it will be less likely that intruders can enter the building because now there are less external exits.
To check the status of the breezeways, take a peak out of any window in classrooms on the 300 or 400 halls.
