Teachers, students have conflicting views on gun control

Given the preponderance of gun violence in schools reported in the media the last few years, the issue of gun safety remains on the forefront of many AHS students’ and teachers’ minds. However, opinions are split.

WIth both students and teachers experiencing all of the horror and tragedy at other schools in the U.S., it is good to know where Airport students and teachers stand when it comes to gun control. Tyler, a strong conservative, and an anonymous teacher who self-identifies as an independent share their thoughts and views on gun control.

The most interesting part of this story is how similar their views are until it comes to automatic weapons, and then their views split.

Tyler, who has twelve guns in his house, says, “Automatic weapons shouldn’t be banned because you got all these gun enthusiast who want guns.”

The anonymous teacher, when asked about automatic weapons, said, “For the general public there isn’t really a need.”

When later asked about gun control, Tyler stated, “These colors don’t run, they reload.”

It is safe to say that they both want guns to stay around but views on automatic weapons are very conflicting. They both think that background checks before buying guns should be expanded to gun shows and include mental health history.

According to BBC News in 2018 there were more than 94 school gun incidents in the U.S. alone. WIth most schools that have classes 180 days a year, that is an incident one out of every two says that you are in school.
