Airport High hosts state wrestling championships again

The South Carolina High School League let Airport High School hosted the wrestling state finals on February 9th. This is the second time AHS has hosted the championships, and the SCHSL plans to let the school host for many years to come.

This event brings people from all over the state to our school and see our campus.

The AHS wrestling team wasn’t in the finals but placed in the top 4 in the AAAA SCHSL. The team was beat out in a close match with North Myrtle Beach High School who then went on to face the reigning champion Eastside High School.

There are 4 divisions with a state championship across all sports in South Carolina; A-AA, AAA, AAAA, which Airport resides, and AAAAA group together schools all over the state by student body size and money granted to them.

When asked about how we got the opportunity to host the championships, seventh year head wrestling coach, Steven Sisk, said, ”Dreher couldn’t host it last year so we offered to host.” He glamoured, “They liked us hosting so much we decided to host it again.”

“The whole experience was fun! But setting up and tearing down after was hard. Well and I’m upset the team didn’t make it,” said Bryson P., a co-captain on the team.

Although the AHS hosted it, Airport didn’t receive any money from tickets or sportswear sold, only from concessions. This is unfortunate as Airport desperately needs new wrestling mats.
