Lack of laws keeping kids safe at schools makes no sense, poses problems

Many students recall the walkout March 14th, where Airport students walked around the track for 17 minutes, marking the 17 lives lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

This isn’t the first school shooting. Actually, the first one was in the 1700s, but everyone remembers the shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado as the most significant shooting in the contemporary era. This shooting led to policy changes at police departments. Prior to this attack, police would set up a perimeter around the building and wait for SWAT. Now police officers go in and confront the attackers.

So why can’t we make the same changes in Congress?

I’m not saying take away the 2nd Amendment. Not by any means of the imagination. But we need to prevent school shootings, church shootings, any shootings at all.

The only way I can truthfully explain the inadequacy of gun laws is compare them to women’s reproductive rights. Why is my uterus more regulated than a gun? For example, doctors won’t perform any sort of reproductive surgery on a woman in fear that her future husband might want children, but how can a woman want children when they’re just going to die in a school shooting? Why do I have to be counseled, forced to have an ultrasound, have to drive all the way to Charleston to have an abortion when a person has to wait three days for a background check to come back to get a gun when the background check doesn’t even have time to process? Why is my ability to bring life into this world more important than someone’s ability to take it away?

Why should a child be concerned her light up shoes would alert an intruder while she’s at school? Why should teachers be given guns to act on the 2nd Amendment when football players are criticized for practicing their 1st Amendment? My freedom of speech isn’t okay at work, but a person’s freedom to bear arms is okay?

Let’s face it, the government doesn’t care about us. They’re too concerned with the currency they produce. Why is it that a student’s life is worth less than a firearm? If Republicans are so “pro-life”, why don’t they protect my life? Why didn’t they protect 26 innocent people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 of which were 6 and 7 year old babies?

I suppose it’s safe to say that America is in the toilet. This country can’t even protect their own citizens, much less defend against North Korea, ISIS, or Russian hacking. So explain to me why a 19 year old who has mental problems needs an assault rifle?

Do you really need an assault rifle? Do you hunt deer with one? No, you hunt humans with one. You don’t need to give mass casualty weapons to civilians who can’t even be trusted to drive a car without causing an accident. And guess what, kids, cars are regulated!

Republicans will say gun control won’t work. But neither has trying to keep a racist pedophile out of office, keep pot out of kids’ hands, and stopping teens from having underage sex! This is why I call for the kids in Generation Z to step up and vote blue to make change. Democrats want change, and Republicans don’t.

Keep weapons out of the hands of those who will do harm.
