March 14 walkout: for the right reasons?
On March 14, Airport High School students participated in a 17 minute walkout to honor the 17 lost students in the Florida school shooting. This walkout was mostly nationwide in most of the schools across America. Many students were happy to participate but was it for the right reason or was it just to get out of class for a few minutes? Just from talking to students in my classes and around school I think they mostly participated because it got them out of class for a little while. I have heard some say thy didn't know what it was for; they just went because other people did, and I heard that some were complaining about it being cold, and the time was supposed to be a quiet and reverent time but I was told the students were not quiet.
I believe the biggest reason that students participated in the walkout was merely to get out of their classes. So many students will do anything they can to get out of class because they just don't like being in class, and it's sad that they took advantage of a good thing, like this walkout to honor students whose lives were taken, and use it as a get out of class free card. The majority of students didn't even know what the walkout was for and what to do. They just were told they could walkout of class and not get in trouble so they just walked out and hung out with their friends and cut up instead of be reverent and respectful like the purpose was to have the walkout. One thing that really bothers me too is that some were complaining.
The walkout was intended to be a meaningful and reverent time. That means the students were supposed to be quiet not cutting up and loud, which they were not. They were outside walking the track but from students who participated in the walkout there was a large amount of students complaining about being cold and saying they should have stayed in class. Like what about the whole reason to go outside? The ones who have that attitude are very disrespectful and don't need to partake of meaningful events without knowing what or who they are participating for. It is disrespectful and meaningless if it is ruined by people with sour attitudes and complaining from students about being too cold. The students also were disrespectful because they were not quiet.
The walkout was intended for a good purpose and was supposed to be respectful and and time of reverence to honor the students whose lives were taken. That means it is supposed to be a time that is quiet and respectful, not cutting up and carrying on with friends or ruining it by complaining about it being cold outside in late winter. People are unbelievable these days. It really takes a cold hearted and selfish person to take something like the walkout that’s a good idea and meaningful and to mess it up by complaining or abusing it just to get out of class. The fact they complain and just used it as a get out of class and hangout with their friends. It is just how people are today, they are used to getting everything handed to them on a silver platter and they get used to complaining and getting their way or not doing stuff and getting the grade or either someone else does the work.
The National event last week in schools across America was a 17 minute walkout to honor those lost students in the shooting that took place in Florida. Like most similar things the people didn't participate for the right reason and abused the purpose for the event. The majority of participants just went to get out of class for the limited time and to hangout with their friends. They were also ruining the reverent time by being noisy and complaining about the temperature. Most students likely didn't even know what the reason was they had the walkout and this means they weren't participating for the right reason. I personally don't like that students participated for the wrong reason to me it just isn't right and not humane to ruin something like this event with complaining and being noisy with friends and not knowing the reason.
