Charity Drive provides students with fun, good cause
On March 12, 2018, at AHS campus, students and parents helped raise money for Camp Kemo. Throughout the week, the students got a fun, relaxing week of donating and buying things in school. This is big because this money helps the kids with chemo get cured.
This most interesting part about this story is what the students do for the kids. During charity week, students are given a fair amount of events to do during each day Monday through Sunday. Majority of these events were held at the school were buying food, the lockups, and sending pets.
On Wednesday, all third block classes compete in a event we have known as third block throw down. During the class period, students call parents, friends outside of school, or other relatives to help them raise money for Camp Kemo. Many students like to save their money for the Friday of charity week, which is the food fest. Food fest is when many food trucks come to the school and in school clubs make desserts like cookies and cakes to sell to students. This is where majority of the money is raised.
David H., a student at AHS, said “I personally wouldn’t change anything about charity drive week. It’s good the way it is”.
“I usually spend about five dollars,” says Connor G., a senior from Airport, ”maybe even ten to fifteen.”
“Food fest personally is my favorite event during charity drive week.” says David H. “I love buying pies, pizza, and wings.
Many students are happy about donating during charity drive week, but some aren’t fortunate enough to do the same. Some students scrap up what they can to donate. Others just have the money or the money is given to them. Some say the prices are too high and just hold out until they get what they want.
In the past two decades, AHS has raised more than half a million dollars according to local news websites. Majority of the money comes from the best events at the high school. Also at least 800 to 1200 kids participate in charity drive week. Many kids who can’t help out do try if they can.
