Tide Pod challenge affects students

Tide Pods are being consumed by students all over the nation, and they show no signs of slowing down. Students at AHS may be at risk.

Students’ safety have always been a top priority at Airport High School, but now lives are being threatened by a highly unlikely suspect. Teens are eating the condensed versions of laundry detergent for attention via social media. These ridiculously dangerous actions have caused over twelve thousand hospitalizations, according to The Washington Post.

The Tide Pods Challenge stemmed from a meme gone wrong. A Twitter user requested that Fruit Gushers brand make gummies that looked like laundry pods, which are bright blue, orange, and white. Of course, this created numerous posts involving the joke of eating Tide Pods.

When asked about the challenge, the same opinion was given: While the memes themselves may be funny, the actions of consuming Tide Pods in real life are far from laughable.

“This affects students because it is causing them to put themselves in danger by trying this because of peer pressure or because it’s ‘the cool thing to do,” says Bryce F., a sophomore.

According to ShiAnne P., “Tide Pods are dangerous! They are not to be consumed!”

If you or a friend have ingested the cleaning products, please call Poison Control and seek medical attention immediately.
