Students hate cell phone policy

On the AHS campus, students continue to dislike the limitations on cell phones in class due to the cell phone policy enforced in the 2017-2018 school year.

Students think that the teachers should decide how the phone policy should be. The year before Mr.Coleman came, students were used to having their phones out or playing music during the non-instructional times in class and walking in the hallways with no complaints from teachers. This school year, you’ll see that students are getting even more write-ups than last year just because they can’t keep their phones away and out of sight. If this was to change, teachers will choose how to set their rules for the phone policy.

The most interesting part of this story are the students junior Gustavo S. and senior Connor G.. During Connor's school year in the past, he would like to be on his phone after class work was done. For Gustavo, he would like to listen to music after his work was done. The phone policy should be more of the teacher's decisions. A bit more leeway for kids like it was a few years ago.

The phone policy, as of now, has been around for roughly a year and a half. More students are being told to put their phone up and take their earbuds or headphones out more often. Many warnings and d-notes are being written as well.

Connor G. says “I don’t want my senior privileges taken away from me, so I follow it.”

Gustavo also added, “If someone important texts me while I have it out, then I’ll text them back.”

Most students think that if the teachers made their own rules with the phone policy, then it would be more reasonable. Even though students want this to pass, the phone policy will most likely not change.

At least half the students are being told to put their phones away while in the halls and during class. On top of that, about five to ten students are being held in E-block due to having their phones out.
