Volleyball players held pink game in October to raise money for breast cancer; players reminisce
With donations from almost everybody in West Columbia, the AHS Volleyball team had a pink-out game in October to raise money for breast cancer awareness month. What this means is both teams, Chapin High School and Airport High School, wear pink jerseys and decorate the gym with lots of breast cancer posters.
A lot of women suffer from breast cancer and are glad that someone is doing this for them. By doing this it may seem like a little bit of money we raise but it really isn’t and the women really appreciate someone caring about them.
An interesting fun fact is that each year the teams come together and play each other and also raise over $1000 in one night.
Also they have been doing this fundraiser for a little over 8 years and each year they play Chapin High School.
Regarding a question about what the funds raised go towards, “Treatment, wigs, and prosthetics to make them feel comfortable,” said Jessie C, a senior volleyball player.
Many wonder, “Do you know anyone who has been affected by breast cancer? “ Meetze, one of the volleyball coaches who started this fundraiser answered,“No, not personally but someone who has been through the Lexington Medical Crystal Smith Program.”
“ Yes, many women will still need this help not everyone can afford it,” said Meetze.
This event is a very good event and will hopefully continue on to help women with breast cancer.
Each year Jessica Meetze takes the volleyball team to Lexington Medical Center to visit the shop women who have breast cancer shop in.
Also an estimation of 266,120 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 will die from it. Women aren’t the only ones who can be diagnosed with breast cancer men can be too . An estimation of 2,550 men are diagnosed and 460 will die from it. Retrieved from breastcancer.org
