News 19 returns to Airport High, honors senior basketball player Calvin F.
Airport student Calvin Ford is presented with player of the week on January 25th. Students filled the school’s arena to help congratulate Calvin.
Students are very familiar with packing the gym for pep rallies and other events all the time. So when they were excused from class to come down to the arena it was no different. They were invited to help cheer and scream on the WLTX Player of the Week, Calvin F.
There are many talented young students at Airport High, but this time Calvin’s talent was recognized. This was felt on a personal level with many students at school because students have classes with him and others are friends with him.
The most interesting part of this story is that Calvin believes that other people he knew on his team deserved the award as well. He recognized that he was not the only talented student-athlete.
Calvin started playing at the age of 5. He remembers as a little boy going to the park with his dad and uncle to play the game of twenty-one. Once he played more and more he began to find the love for the game of basketball.
Another senior teammate, Jordan R., has also been rewarded for his great basketball talents. “My greatest [award] was being asked to join my high school varsity [basketball] team in 9th grade,” said the starting basketball senior, Jordan R.
Calvin looks up to more people other then his dad and uncle. Calvin F. said,“ I look up to LeBron James and Russell Westbrook.” Each person has something different that he learns from them.
Jordan R., who has played with Calvin F. for three years, also takes school and basketball seriously. “I put my school work first. Athletics comes after school,” said the starting basketball senior, Jordan R.
Calvin’s teammates thought the award was well deserved. Students also agreed that Calvin was a good fit for the Player of the Week. Many people knew that Calvin was a student before an athlete and that he took both things very seriously.
WLTX Player of the Week was very familiar with the sports department at Airport. Two former students, Brett B. and Paxton B., were also given this title.
