REVIEW: Dear White People
Dear White People is a satire which highlights all the problems we have in our “post-racial” society.
They address such topics as the N word, black face, cultural appropriation, assimilation, and police brutality.
The show studies a close group of students that are mostly African American that attend a predominantly white Ivy League-inspired but fictional Winchester University. Each “chapter” focuses on one character specifically and highlights the problems they go through as a black student in a white school. Each character is unique in their own way and deals with the subtle (and not so subtle) racism at their school.
Director Justin Simien touches many issues African Americans deal with not so delicately. The problems aren't subtle; they're put on the screen big and bold.
Racism is still real and it still exist, and Simien does a great job of acknowledging this with also making the characters real. Many times during the show the characters will look into the camera and speak almost as if speaking to the audience. He gives black people a voice and lets them use it well.
Overall I give the show a 8 out of 10. I'd recommend this show to anyone despite their color. If you're ignorant to racism this show will wake you up.
